Now in the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, still working from home, only occasionally venturing out in public, well-masked and very wary of other people, I find it liberating to get up early and go out into the empty streets before sunrise. Drawn by the light sources that intermittently reveal areas which go unnoticed in daylight, I find myself looking at things in new ways--straight up into the trees and lights, more aware and entranced by the interplay of barren tree branches, streetlamps, and the buildings that surround us. For me it feels mythic, primeval, sometimes threatening, sometimes peaceful; often transporting.
